Application for demolition of existing and construction of 9 dwellings and associated external works.
P4 of Design and Access Statement states: 'Covered & secure cycle spaces are illustrated on the drawing and under current standard guidelines for new residences. They are generally near the entrances to each flat or available for visitors.'
However, 'Sheffield hoop under stair' is only indication I can see on site plan, so looks as though they are light on detail here and difficult to see if sufficient provision will be made for cycles.

Hardwick is seen as a commuter village for Cambridge but currently there are no cycle paths at all within the village, other than a 2 mile long on-road advisory shared with 40 mph traffic. There is also no cycle path north-south through the village - just over a mile. This is a village of around 1250 homes currently being extended to around 1500 but with little attention being paid to cycling yet.
In the S.106 Agreement for West Cambourne construction (2350 homes), SCDC Planning Reference S/2903/14/OL, Cambridge County Council have included an upgraded Cycle and footpath from West Cambourne to Cambridge passing through Hardwick. This can be seen in the S.106 Agreement Schedule 13 and is shown as Fully Funded in the current Cambridge County Council Transport Investment Plan, Scheme number 123.
Before construction of this goes ahead, will there be consultation with villages and residents along the route and do we have any indication of when this might commence? I note there should be plans available but these plans should be readable, clarified and modified with input from the villages on the route including Hardwick.
In the original plan submitted it seems the cycle paths proposed pass directly in front of 150 or so businesses and residential properties accesses and driveways which would seem to be entirely inappropriate for serious cycle-to-work opportunities.
This route appears to be independent from the Cambridge County Council "Greenways" initiative which also did not engage with Hardwick either

The section of Park Terrace behind the hotel is wide enough for a cycle contraflow.
Although people can cycle in front of the pavilion, this is shared use and can be busy with pedestrians. It also means encountering traffic lights involving a wait unnecessarily.
Given that there is space, there seems no good reason not to provide a contraflow - in line with the principle that two-way cycling should be possible unless there is no space to do so.

The County Council would like to know our opinion on allowing motorcycles to use bus lanes.
Motorcycling has become increasingly popular as it is a cheaper alternative than travelling by car, it provides independence and mobility and reduces journey times and emissions on congested roads.
As part of the climate change strategy action plan, the County Council at its meeting on 19th December 2019, agreed to consult on the use of bus lanes for motorcycles and scooters, collectively referred to as powered-two-wheelers.
Over 30 UK towns and cities permit motorcycles in bus lanes since the original trials in London back in 2009 and 2011 demonstrated reduced journey times and environmental benefits with no significant safety issues for motorcyclists or other vulnerable road users.
We would therefore welcome your views on whether you support the use of bus lanes by powered-two-wheelers, these together with any additional comments should be sent in writing to the undersigned or by email to policyandregulation@cambridgeshire.gov.uk by 10th April 2020 quoting reference PTWBus.
The feedback we receive will help us understand the level of support for the scheme.

The site for the new building between in the triangle between the cycle path the busway, and non-busway road has a solid hoarding around it. To help visibility, the solid hoardings have been removed for 3 panels on the cycle path side, and only 2 on the road side, so traffic has greater visibility of cyclists that cyclists have of motor vehicles - so vehicles assume there is nothing coming and slow down less than they should.
To increase visibility on the corner, the third solid panel should be replaced with the mesh fencing, as has already been done for the first two on the other side.

The A14 project is bringing a cycleway into the city as far as the University farm. Previous County projects have created a decent inbound cycleway from Laurence Weaver Road and an almost OK painted lane outbound to here. There's a section of cycleway from Girton Corner to Eddington Avenue, and at Girton Corner there's a connection to The Ridgeway along Bunker's Hill. There are Cycleways intercepting Huntingdon Road at Whitehouse Lane, both into Eddington and into Darwin Green.
But oh dear. Laurence Weaver Road junction is awful. Eddington Avenue junction is awful, and there's a very narrow and much over-run cycle lane to the north of it. Girton Corner junction is poor and serves poorly those who want to go from Girton village and College to the Ridgeway.
The section of road needs a holistic approach that incorporates the route along and the routes crossing in a coherent manner.

The cycleway has a sever problem with tree-root damage. The largest fault is a sharp triangular profile about 10cm high. This has been reported to CambsCC six times according to their fault reporting, starting two years ago, including one person who came off their bike beacause of it. I reported it in September 2018. Nothing whatsoever has been done about it.
I wrote to my county councillor (John Williams, in whose division this also lies) about the failure to act in January. He did not reply. I have written again today.
Yesterday, I was thrown off my bike by my pedal catching the largest upstand. Fortunately the only damage was a sore knee for a few hours.
I have now made a formal complaint of negligence to the Counmty Council. They have had two years and a report of injury, but have failed to act.

The chain-link fencing on the south side of the path on the west ramp off the Tins rail bridge is badly bowed out into the path. This is at face level and could take someone's eye out: it is dangerous.
There was already a report on county HIghways for this, which was dismissed as "landowner responsibility", which may be network rail or may be the chalk pits land. There was no indication in the closed issue whether they had actually informed the landowner, so I reported it again today.

This is a hostile roundabout. It has been fiddled around with over the years, to add advisory cycle lanes, lights, pedestrian crossings, etc.
The area needs a fundamental redesign, to replace the roundabout probably with a protected intersection design.
It is outrageous that a health site such as Addenbrooke's has such an unsafe and anti-cycling junction as its main entrance.

Currently there are 'No cycling' notices despite this being a major cycle route.
Although it is unlikely that major works can be done to the bridge, changes on the approaches could reduce the conflicts, by improving 'intervisibility' between the different users.
A meeting between various parties (Councillors, County bridge engineer, cycling officers, and cycling campaign is proposed.

I've just sent a sharp email to the Council. It reads as below. If the council can't do joined up information on their own websites, how do they expect people to make these modal shifts in transport that they are so keen on?

I was looking for this information as I was just emailing a friend who

would be aware of this scheme, which she may find useful. However, if we
have to spend five minutes doing exactly the correct google searches, it
counts as a "secret facility" apart from those in the know.
I wasn't aware, for example, that you could also get pushchairs at the
Grand Arcade one. This information needs better dissemination, and
linking from within the car park and other public transport pages, so
that people can make a properly informed decision about their transport
choices when visiting the city. This, surely, is the way to get modal
shifts in people's transport choices?"

Access to and return journey from the Crematorium is a real challenge for the cyclist. Indeed, chances are you may end up in it if you try to ride your bike there.
Here we have a essential public service which is accessible by car only. Is this acceptable ?
These issues arise also if a convoy of bicycles was to accompany a coffin.

Travis Perkins Development has major impact on Chisholm Trail.
We have a letter from the developer outlining their position - let's see if I can attach this...
There is a lengthy discussion of the Chisholm Trail, the gist of which is that they don't see why they should make any further accommodation for it when it is mainly Network Rail's land that is earmarked for the route. They dangle a small carrot in that they might release the corner piece of land to mitigate the pinch point you identified - but only if this application is given the go-ahead.

How can we support the growth of local initiatives ?
How can we overcome the division urban and rural cycling?
Would it be useful to establish a network of regional groups?
Could such a network become an interesting partner for the county planners?
Would politicians be able to hear us better if we speak from a position of regional awareness, a a group of groups?
Would it help the elected to understand that things are changing on our roads?
Could such a network support constituent groups, facilitate exchange between these groups, become a more important player in the national context?
Could such a network attract its own funding?
What would be a good name for such a grouping (NAMES ARE IMPORTANT)
We have CTC, Ely, A10 Corridor, Martin T thinking about something in Bury St Edmunds, "Routes around Chatteris", Wisbech forum (set up by the County), - anything else ?
Gallagher Estate, master planners of Orchard Park will soon hand over the highways for adoption by the County Council.
We won't be able to fix this car centric development, but within it there are many pavement cycleways, "cyclists dismount" signs, cul-de-sac signs and others which are wrong or don't apply. There are also issues with dropped kerbs etc.
I am looking for volunteers to audit Orchard Park, making a list of corrections we require before Gallaghers hands this project over.

Hello, I'm wondering how many other Cambridge cyclists have shared the experience I've had (about once per month now) regarding a particular elderly lady who insists that bikes are not allowed on the "footpath" adjacent to the Trumpington allotments, between Shelford Rd & the new busway in CB2. This path seems clearly demarcated as a shared pedestrian-cycle path on the cycle maps provided at the council link (below). However, it is not clearly labeled as such on the path itself, leading her to become quite angry with any cyclist who gets near her & her dog while they're out walking (and obstructing the path to underscore her point). "It's a footpath" she yells, and storms away.
So my questions are 1) am I correct in interpreting the council map (below) as permitting bikes on this path and 2) how might one go about requesting proper signage, clearly saying bikes & pedestrians are both welcome?

The link from Barton Road to the Lammas Land car park (and the car park itself) have been closed to all use by the County Council for some development work. This is a buisy cycle route, and no effort has been put into providing a diversion. Currently most people are cycling across the grass behind the hedge beside the road (though how long this will remain possible if it rains is unclear); an alternative is to use other paths across Lammas Land, but they are narrow, not actually marked for cycling, and it's further.
According to a notice at the junction with Barton Road this work will continue to the start of December. There was and is no warning when approaching from east of the river.

I propose the creation of bike/bus scheme: a bus service for Sundays and Bank holidays leaving Cambridge Rail Station, heading out through Barton Road and linking Burwash Manor, Wimpole Hall, Gamlingay Woods, Great Gransden Woods etc in a circular route. Short cycle routes to be developed around villages along the route. Cyclists can choose the length of journey they want to make and be assured of a ride home by bus if they do not wish to cycle back to Cambridge...
A 24 cycle bike-trailer can be towed behind a 20 seater bus, providing sustainable tourism access to South Cambridgeshire and passenger transport services for settlements that do not currently have Sunday services. Please respond and state whether you would be interested in such a service.
