  • Cambridge Northern Fringe East

Created by Jim Chisholm // 4 threads

There is now an Area Action Plan for the Northern Fringe East
This is a huge area, and if the Anglia Water Works site is also redeveloped it brings big oportunities and associated risks
The Campaign needs to be involved

  • Removal of railings (where bikes are chained) at Addenbrookes

    Richard G // 1 thread

I see Addenbrooke's have found a solution to all the bikes locked to the railings around by the front entrance.

Not, as you might hope, by providing more cycle parking, but by removing the railings.

I wandered around yesterday. There were 91 bikes parked outside of cycle rack spaces & 6 spaces free.

should be interesting for anyone who usually cant park in a cycle space over the next few days
    :(

  • Lammas Land

Created by Monica Frisch // 2 threads

There are various cycle routes across Lammas Land and along the southern edge. There are already the following Cyclescape threads:

#126 cycle path on Lammas Land (proposal for a new cycle path on the southern side of Lammas Land)
#329 Lammas Land car park route improvements (as far as I can tell this covers much the same issue as #126)
#986 route obstructed at Lammas Land

I am about to create a new thread for lighting on Lammas Land, as there's a trial and consultation underway

  • lack of queue busting cycle lane

Created by Heather Coleman // 1 thread

Since they appear to have changed the phasing at the lights at Cherry Hinton Road the other side of the railway bridge this morning, it becomes ever more apparent that if you have queueing traffic all the way southbound from Station Road to Cherry Hinton Road, the lack of even a narrow "queue-busting" cycle lane here, combined with the shocking state of the kerbside approx 9 inches of road surface (uneven cobbles and slabs, very slippery, very difficult even to use while scooting your bike along by a foot on the pavement), that cyclists are being seriously held up. Once the advisory lane outside the Centennial Hotel (well obeyed by drivers this morning in general apart from when the right hand turn queue for Brooklands Ave starts) ends, you just get stuck in a queue of kerb-car-car traffic and cannot access the ASL at the junction with Brookgate, in order to take advantage of the cycle lanes which queue-bust you across the railway bridge.

This leads to a) pavement cycling, b) people nipping in and out of a queue of vaguely stationary/starting to move traffic c) nipping back infront of traffic which is starting to move at the lights after white lining to get past the queue. All of the cars stuck in that queue will have to wait at least two cycles of the lights at Cherry Hinton Road before proceeding and thus are just an obstruction.

Given that this is a relatively recently refurbished/altered road, I suppose this should have been spotted at the time.

What can be done about it retrospectively? If the traffic light phasing at Cherry Hinton Road stays as it is, there will be an accident before too long.

  • S/2347/12/FL Bard Pharma site

Created by Rohan Wilson // 1 thread

Cambridge Science Park though in the northern edge of the city, is administratively in South Cambs.

I propose to attach a thread relating to a new planning application for the Bard Pharma site, northeast corner.

    (Informal Drop-In 15:30 - 18:30, followed by Forum 19:00 - 20:30)

Though the above page indicates it's about residential developments, Addenbrooke's was covered in a presentation on previous 6 Sep meeting. Bell School was not covered.
The main discussion was around schools and young people.

  • Qualitative Cycle Infrastructure Assessment

Created by Robin Heydon // 1 thread

What if we could create a standardised method of assessing cycling infrastructure, either proposed by developers or existing?

Northstowe used something called the "IHT Cycle Audit Guidelines" that appear to be from 1996. Perhaps something better can be done that follows a more continental approach?

    Thoughts? Opinions?

  • Location Fees for Cycle Free Filming

    Created by velocipedus@gmail.com // 1 thread

"Anyone who uses the racks in St John's Street, Trinity Street, and King's Parade, may have seen notices about filming this week. They're suspending cycle parking for Wednesday and Thursday 'due to the nature of the filming'. The mind boggles" (Bev)

The suspension notice (elevation, lifting?) says "We have been working with Cambridge council to achieve this. " This phrase probably means that the production company has negotiated a location fee with the city council for filming on Cambridge streets, and to film "bike free". If it is correct that the CCC represents Cambridge Cyclists, and in so far as our constituency bears the impact of this "suspension", we would be well placed to receive some compensation for the inconvenience forced upon local cyclists. 1000 £ or 2000 £ could buy us a lot of bike badges (pins), including blue ones of course

Get rid of the car parking in this street and replace with cycle racks - swapping 10s of customers for 100s for local businesses.
