    At a recent BUG-WAG* meeting, the Trust reported that the council will be modifying the Long Road/Adrian way junction.


    Those of you that know the area will know that the exit from Addenbrooke's is 'no right turn' with a small shaped island to direct traffic westbound onto Long Rd


    plans were shown to create a cutout in the small island for bikes to exit eastbound. Presuamably with signs to indicate this too


    The trust said that suggestions to the junction would be welcome in the planning of further changes to Long Rd

  • Cambridge South West Travel Hub

    GCP project:

    Junction 11 of the M11 is a key entry point into Cambridge. With significant growth in housing and employment in the area, upgrading the existing transport infrastructure in this area is vital to reduce congestion and improve access into the city.

    Congestion impacts on current bus journey times making journeys unreliable, unattractive and longer than necessary, as well as affecting the convenience and comfort of cycling trips on the corridor.

    By expanding the existing Travel Hub in Trumpington and creating more Travel Hub provision (either by creating multi-storey parking at the Trumpington site or a new Travel Hub to the west of Junction 11), car drivers can be encouraged to complete their journeys by bus. More Travel Hub use would help the flow of traffic and make employment sites such as the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, West and North Cambridge easier to reach.

    A consultation on increasing Travel Hub spaces to the south west of Cambridge ran until 21 December 2018. Thank you to those who attended our events and responded to the consultation. We will now collate the responses and publish a report in the Spring of 2019.

    The Cambridge South West Travel Hub Project is a component of the West of Cambridge package, which includes review and development options for Travel Hub facilities, creation of new Travel Hub locations, and enhancement or upgrade of existing facilities.

  • Trumpington / Chaucer Road Junction

    Proposed new signallng for Trumpington Road / Chaucer Road junction.

    Issues with this:

    1. There is no details as to whether there are toucan crossing signals for the shared use path across the Chaucer Road Arm.

    2. It does not improve safety for city-bound cyclists/pedestrians who still have to avoid vehicles turning left into Chaucer Road.

    2. There remains a major problem with the on road cycle lane on the outbound side where the rear ends of large vehicles, especially coaches and busses, enter into the cycle lane as the vehicles make the slight right turn after the existing island.

    Work is meant to be starting 14th January! Can I write a letter on behalf of the cycling campaign pointing out these issues?

  • dangerous junction - no visibility

    A few years back, the university reopened the Fitzwilliam Gate off the Downing Site, which had been locked and closed for many years. This was to facilitate a one-way system on the site so that vehicles enter via Botany, but leave via Fitzwilliam.

    There is a wall which obstructs visibility of drivers exiting - it is very hard to see traffic coming from the Lensfield Road (southern) end of Tennis Court Road. I spent a few minutes chatting to a friend on that corner and we saw several near-misses.

    Umbrella 'Issue' for several issues facing the path alongside Tesco:

    1. Poor junction design at Riverside
    2. #AbsoluteBollards along the way
    3. Wacky chicanes at Cheddars Lane rendering the path unusable by many people

  • Brookgate / Brooklands Ave / Hills Road junction

    Two issues, really:

    (1) It has puzzled me for some time that there is no way to cycle from Brookgate onto Brooklands Avenue. The traffic signal only shows a left green arrow from Brookgate onto Hills Road, which serves the buses, but Brooklands is a major cycle route and would make sense to access it directly from the station (there is a long way around via Clarendon & the busway otherwise).

    As it happens, when the left green arrow is showing, I have never seen any other conflicting traffic movement (although presumably Hills Road left onto Brooklands Ave is green at this time? I haven't checked). So it seems like it would be very simple to fix this problem: just convert the green left arrow into a green ball & cut any conflicting movements.

    (2) Regardless of that change, there should also be an advanced-stop-line on Brookgate, which there currently is not, so that buses do not sneak up and left-hook people. Even when making a left turn from Brookgate you can be left-hooked by a left-turning bus if they are not careful. So the lack of ASL here is rather strange.

  • Coldham's Lane / Cromwell Road junction

    This junction is currently very poor. Cyclists end up doing awkward manoeuvres and visibility is not good.

    It is possible this could be improved as part of the Chisholm Trail.

    How could this junction be redesigned to make it best practice?

  • St Andrew's St - Emmanuel St Junction

    further to the piece in newsletter 128, I wonder if any thought has been given to the difficulty of turning right into Emmanuel Street if you are coming towards the town centre from St Andrew's Street? We go fairly often to the Arts Cinema and this is the obvious way for us to go home, but it is impossible to turn right on the correct side of the bollard at present as it is designed only for left turning cycles coming out of town. There is, however, nothing to suggest that such a right turn is illegal.

  • New slip road A14 westbound to M11 southbound

    The DfT have written to us with a proposed TRO to replace the sliproad from westbound A14 at Girton to southbound M11. This is also part of the widening scheme between Histon and Girton, but this aspect requires an order to give the lane motorway status. The main effect seems to be to lengthen the A14 part of the slip road to reduce queues on the main A14.

    I don't think anything particular needs doing with this, so I don't plan to scan the correspondence, but if anyone wants if, please ask.

  • CRC Science Park Busway Junction

    The Guided Busway is a huge success. It carries many adults and youth to and from many destinations, a major destination being the Cambridge Regional College bus stop. Unfortunately, the volume of bicycle and pedestrian traffic along the line of the busway at this point probably wasn’t considered and is now causing problems. It will probably cause even more problems once the new Science Park Station is built at the far end of the busway.

    Current Situation

    When I started looking at this junction, I tried to ignore what was “built” and instead tried to observe how people moved through the junction. In the first diagram I’ve shown the main desire lines. Desire lines are where people actually move rather than those which engineers designed. For example, when crossing the access road to the college, from the busway, people walked in as straight a line as possible pretty much ignoring the supposed 90º toucan crossing.

    Many people on bicycles don’t bother with the toucan but instead just wait for a gap between the traffic light phases and quickly scoot across. Many people ignore what has been designed and have found new, possibly better, ways through the junction - for example, creating a path from King Hedges Road over bare ground. This informal crossing obviously works, but is it safe? Do the bus drivers expect people to cross at this point?

    There are many conflict points, some less bothersome than others. The two biggest problems are at the bus stop exit junction with the science park entrance, and between the toucan crossing and the brick surround of the gas supply for the area. When cycling there can be many people trying to cross the road, especially after the bus has stopped, or just before classes are due to start, all getting in your way. Of course, we are getting in their way too, and this isn’t helped by the poor sight lines.

    I would therefore summarise that the problems are simply:

    1. Severely limited space at the toucan crossing and busway crossing points.
    2. Informal pedestrian crossing show junction isn’t working as desired.
    3. Very narrow access to science park with poor sight lines.

    Proposed Solution

    First, we should always respect peoples desire lines. They are voting with their feet, it is obviously safe enough for them to do it day after day, and they have left plenty of evidence that it works by wearing down the grass. So we should make this a proper pedestrian route. This actually has two benefits: it moves a lot of the pedestrian traffic to the west side of the busway stop reducing the number of people at the science park entrance, and it allows a more “directed” path to the north side of that brick building.

    Second, we should separate the CRC traffic and guided busway traffic as much as possible at the CRC junction. The busway traffic should follow their natural desire line which is straight on. There are wide turning splays for buses to access the busway from the CRC, yet no buses do this. We should remove them and make a straight on toucan in line with the busway. The CRC traffic would be given their own toucan on the north side of the brick building. Some of the existing railing (cycle parking) here may need to be removed, and the car stop line pushed back a car length or so. The space between the car stop line and the new toucan could usefully become an advanced cycle box.

    Third, we should build a proper segregated footway to the north of the cycle track that links to the existing footway going to the “new” toucan. This would be built similar to the Coton path such that pedestrian traffic would be encouraged to seek the higher and safer ground.

    Forth, we should straighten the line for access from the science park to the busway. The current facility bends away from the busway crossing, is very narrow, and limits the flow. I’ve seen times when people are queuing cross the busway to travel through this gate. On the south side, the highly restrictive chicane should be removed. People happily cross the busway at multiple points without problems, as here the buses are moving very slowly as they approach the station.

    Lastly, we should alter the phasing of the traffic lights. A simple desire for people on bicycle is to wait as little time as possible, but we take very little time to cross a road. Therefore, I would suggest that bicycles are given a green light between every car phase, but only for a few seconds. They should also be given a green light whenever the busway is given a green light. The individual phases may need to be lengthened slightly, say from 25 seconds to 30 seconds to maintain the “capacity”, but the advantages it gives to bicycles would be huge. Also, the pedestrian crossing could be changed to a zebra crossing. This route would then become preferable to the slower toucan crossing further pulling people away. It would also allow for a much more pedestrian focused environment around what should be highly walkable area.

  • Changes on Cherry Hinton Road approach to Hills Road

    What on earth do they think they are doing here? The cycle lane alongside the new development on Cherry Hinton Road (former Tim Brinton motors) has been removed (after being closed for months) and now splits into two, one part directing cycles onto what looks like it will become an exceptionally narrow cycleway on the pavement (which ends up rejoining the road just at the lights on the far left); or diverting cycles in a weird swerve out into the road to meet the sides of the constant queue of vehicles.

  • Bit of a squeeze - junction of Newmarket Road and Coldhams Lane

    The new layout at this junction is an improvement for pedestrians. But turning right into Newmarket Rd from Coldhams Lane, all traffic passes through a narrow constriction between traffic islands: not wide enough for a car + cycle, let alone a larger vehicle + cycle. Any other comments on this?

    From the EIP programme for the South Area Committee, a proposal to put in a signalised crossing. (The report mentions Fulbrooke Road (which is in Newnham and not part of this patch) but I think it means here instead.) It's likely to get South Area Transport Corridor funding. No more details given.
