  • A14 Roundabout J32 Works

Created by Joe Adam // 1 thread

The A14 works have closed the east side pavement/cyclepath for some amount of time.

This either forces people to cross the rode via 4 toucan crossings (and cycle or walk up a very narrow stretch) which is technically not a cycle path I believe.  Alternatively people have to cycle on road across a busy 2 lane 60mph limit roundabout.

  • Cycle path closed

Created by Helen Cook // 1 thread

Cycle path on southbound side of Eddington Avenue has been closed for no apparent reason since August 2018.  Obstructive signs tell cyclists to dismount or use the road.

  • Wintr Fair bins on cycle path

    Created by Amelie K // 0 threads

Extra blue and black bins have been put along Gonville Place, near where the cyclist counter used to be. They narrow the cycle lane in real, and effectively. Their location generally is poorly thought through (if at all). They are clearly intended for visitors to the winter fun fair on Prkers Piece, who will be on foot, but to use the bins they need to cross the cycle lane.

  • Regent Terrace temporary closure

Created by Monica Frisch // 1 thread

Regent Terrace is temporarily closed, at least during working hours, because of building work. Signage indicates a 'temporary footpath' which is just compacted ground at the edge of Parker's Piece.

  • Closure of Garret Hostel Lane

    Created by velocipedus@gmail.com // 1 thread

Garret Hostel Lane is closed since Sunday. There is no information posted about reason, duration of closure. Alternative route (Silver Street) is a poor alternative. What is going on? This is a crucial piece of car-free bicycle infrastructure that should not be removed from the network.

  • Blockage of cycle lane by street light replacement

Created by Heather Coleman // 1 thread

Yet again, Balfour Beatty are doing an utterly shocking job on the street light replacements. I thought there was a thread about this somewhere but I can't find it thus can't find if we've got any contacts to directly complain to.

Basically, there's a large hole in the pavement around where I've put the pointer - not sure that's 100% accurate since I was occupied with other things. So the cycle lane is closed to allow pedestrians somewhere to walk.

That has been fine this week as it's the school holidays and there is virtually no traffic to speak of. Come Monday, when Hills Road is nose-to-tail gridlock, cyclists will be double and pedestrians probably doubled, it's going to be dangerous chaos. The pedestrian route will not actually be wide enough for all the pedestrians that walk along there on a school day - they will be queuing to get through, let alone the effect of all the 'stuck' cyclists who can't get into the car lane as that's queuing all the way to Cherry Hinton Road.

What is particularly annoying is that this hole has been there all week with no change.

Basically yet again, they've just dug holes, stuck up obstructions and gone off leaving them. How about digging the hole, doing the work, and filling in the hole in a timely manner. This whole now four-year operation has been a shambles from beginning to end.

Does anyone have any suggestions for direct phone numbers or email addresses so I can complain?

  • Tennis Court Road temporary closure for scaffolding works

    Martin Lucas-Smith // 2 threads

In preparation for the extension to Cambridge Judge Business School, demolition work to Nightingale and Bridget Hostels needs to take place. This will cause an element of disruption on Tennis Court Road as a temporary closure of the footpath, cyclepath and highway is required for the erection of scaffolding.

  • North West Cambridge Building Works

    Created by Rachel_O // 1 thread

Ongoing work on the development of the North West Cambridge site results in cycle paths being blocked at random intervals, and inappropriate pedestrian-oriented alternative provision makes the situation more, not less, dangerous for cyclists, forcing us into a narrow roadway with fast-moving traffic. With the increase in heavy traffic, road surface is also deteriorating rapidly - increasing numbers of large potholes, which can easily lead to pinch flats and other mechanical failures on dangerous, narrow sections where lack of cycle path of pedestrian walkway means here is no escape route.

  • University Arms hotel reconstruction

Created by Richard Jennings // 2 threads

There are a variety of issues with construction lorries in this busy location, closure of the footway outside the hotel, narrowing of the route from Regents Street to Parker's Piece and traffic signal changes. The construction is expected to take two years.

  • Gresham Road Resurfacing - No Diversion

Created by MJR // 0 threads

For a change, I tried following the route signs for the station today. As well as a mystery tour near the Grafton centre where the signs simply stop, my route was blocked at Gresham Road by "WET TAR" and a sign proclaiming it. No diversion was signed and there were no advance warning signs that would have let me pick a better route earlier. Plenty of people were riding along the footways - enough that it was too crowded for me to feel safe doing so. I performed a U-turn, waited a second time at the crossroad traffic lights and rode along the very busy Gonville Place and Hills Road instead.

I've tweeted at Cambridgeshire County Council and Cambridge City Council in https://mobile.twitter.com/mjray/status/453926972843118593 because I don't think that is legal - a cycle route suddenly being blocked by wet tar does not comply with the code of practice on safety at streetworks, which is required by law. I'm disappointed to encounter this in Cambridge.

  • Corn Exchange Street contraflow to close for 2 months

    Martin Lucas-Smith // 1 thread

Corn Exchange Street contraflow is to close temporarily.

Advanced notice of temporary cycle lane closure (aka Woodburn Way) has been published in the Cambridge News. Cars apparently able to proceed, which I find puzzling.

  • Roadworks on the guided busway

Created by Clare Causier // 1 thread

This afternoon the guidedbusway was closed from Cambridge Regional College to Histon. There was a security guard in a car who provided information on the closure and diversion. However, there was no diversion signage for cyclists or pedestrians.

When I returned home I checked cambridgeshire roadworks for further information but drew a blank.

Is anyone aware if works on the busway is covered by any public notification system?

Saturday afternoon is not a bad time for maintenance, but I imagine commuters would appreciate notice of works which affect their journeys.

  • Temporary Traffic lights West site without cycle detection

Created by Hester Wells // 0 threads

Temporary traffic lights for building works between High Cross and Charles Babbage Road.

I have received the following from our building facilities manager as these lights affect access to our building, and two others.

"1. With effect from Monday 22 July there will be 3-way traffic lights positioned between the existing Charles Babbage Road and new CBR. This will last for 1 week. The lights will be installed on Friday ready for operation on Monday. These lights will have an operator to monitor traffic flow during peak periods (8.30am – 9.30am and 4.30pm to 5.30pm). Outside of these times the lights will operate on sensor detection for queued vehicles to avoid unnecessary queuing, and will automatically sequence between the roads when no traffic is present. Unfortunately the lights will not detect and activate for cyclists and cyclists will need to wait for the lights to operate on the normal sequenced rotation.

    2. Following the initial works and as work progresses along CBR, the traffic management will become 2 way light operation along the High Cross Access Road the CBR and this is expected to commence from Monday 29 July for a further 2 weeks.

    3. During the above the New CBR and Access Road to Schlumberger are being prepared and tarmacked – kerbs are being installed etc. Surfacing is to be complete by 12 August ready to opened for use by all to access via the New CBR after 12th August.

    4. Also after 12 August works will commence on finalising the junction at AVEVA/New Data Centre access and this will have 3 way traffic management and is expected to take 3 weeks.

    5. Finally the access road into site via High Cross will close from week commence 19 August and this will be for approximately 7 weeks. This closure will be fully diversion signed from Madingley Road and around the site with diversion management (sighs) taking us via JJ Thompson Road and round to AVEVA from there. However there will be a trial closure of the High Cross Road entrance on the Thursday/Friday 15th & 16th August prior to the work starting on 19th, just to ensure all the signage is correct and easily followed. "

I am interpreting this as at least 6 weeks of temporary traffic lights which will not detect people on bikes.

I suspect cycle detection was only mentioned because I had specifically asked this question when the issue of temporary traffic lights first came up.

I have sent a message back to our facilities manager saying that I don't think this is acceptable as:
    1) Cycle usage is nearly as high has car usage here in summer
    2) I also see people using this as a through-route for Coton
    3) We are on a side road off a through-route for buses, so I suspect the lights on their normal sequence will not be at all favourable for a person on a bike trying to get out, as the normal sequence will not want to disrupt bus flow too much.
    4) I fear that the complete lack of provision will lead to some people breaking the rules, which could be dangerous.

However, she is merely relaying these details to us and is not responsible for it. She can contact the site project managers about any issues, which I hope she will do.

    Any other ideas?

  • Cyclists Dismount (Golden Hind Post Office)

Created by Ian Jackson // 1 thread

There are "Cyclists dismount and use footway" signs at some roadworks on Kings Hedges Road SE-bound outside the Post Office near the Golden Hind.

I spoke to a worker who said the sign had been put in by their traffic management team, after getting permission from Cambridgeshire County Council.

I have phoned the County who say one of their traffic management people will phone me back.

I have also made this FOI request:

  • Hills Road - roadworks chaos

    Martin Lucas-Smith // 2 threads

General chaos in this area due to the roadworks. How can this be better managed to make cycle access as easy as possible?
