Installation of new car park control barrier, at Scott Polar Research Institute, Lensfield Road, Cambridge, CB2 1ER
This is a heavily-used entrance for cycling and walking. The proposed cycle/walk section seems far too small.
This might not be a problem if closed only at night, but during the day would cause an obstruction.
The proposed conversion and new residential development of 48 Verulam Way/15 Ellesmere Road, Cambridge, CB4 2HL to form 8 one bedroom studio apartments.
Eight secure cycle spaces are provided but only at the rear of the development. Is there a risk that cycles are left on the pavement? the proposal includes 6 off-road car parking spaces.

I have observed vehicles queuing at the rising bollards on St. John's Street before 4pm, apparently mostly belong to market tradespeople waiting for the bollards to go down. On at least one occasion this has meant the road is impassable to cyclists.

There is an ongoing shortage of cycle parking spaces. As a result, people park their bikes against lamp post, railings and trees. This is not a sustainable situation and additional secure cycle parking spaces are desperately needed.
The campus is known to be a target of cycle thieves, hence this issue needs to be resolved as a matter of urgency.

The stretch of NCN51 along Stourbridge Common between the Green Dragon Bridge and Riverside is hopelessly inadequate for the high volume of traffic, too narrow, surfacing badly breaking up with a number of hazards - rowing coaches, cows, joggers with headphones etc.
Would anyone else support campaigning for a new two way cycle path through that stretch of Stourbridge common to the south of the existing path (through the middle of that bit of common) from the Green Dragon Bridge to an improved access at Riverside, and leave the path by the river to its myriad of other users? Its only going to get busier when the new station opens...

Small development, there is very little information about cycle however a quick look at the drawing suggests that cycle parking layout is problematic.
From the Planning and Heritage statement.
The accompanying block plan clearly demonstrates that the proposed site arrangements provide for convenient and adequate locations for refuse collection, recycling and on-site cycle parking to provide opportunities to create an attractive setting with suitable hard landscaping and the use of coordinated materials of appropriate colour and texture would ensure a high quality build.
It is considered that although no on-site parking has been made available to the proposed dwellings, the application site’s highly sustainable location and on-site secured cycle storage would encourage future occupiers depend less on private vehicles and travel via other more sustainable methods.
See "PROPOSED BLOCK AND LOCATION PLAN" for drawing.

Due to proximity to other hot spots e.g. Severn Place, Newmarket Road, Eastern Gate I thought it relevant to raise this issue.
There is a change of use from A1 and B1 to D1. (Retail to University Education).
If they are expecting students to access this site then there must be cycle parking and safe infrastructure for cycling to the location. None of this is mentioned in the planning application.

This is a pretty far reaching discussion point, but one I feel is important in establishing cycling as a first class means of transport.
I apologise if this is something for which a consensus is well established, but I was unable to find anything specific on it. Or indeed, or if there is little that can be done!
The issue is that though Cambridge has loads of pavement cycle lanes, they tend to be of the kind that stop at each and every adjoining road. This is suboptimal and really slows down one's progress.
In some cases there are "helpful" give-way markings to remind the cyclist that cars go first. Slightly better are give way markings to both the adjoining road and the cycle lanes, but my experience has been that the road give way marking is often simply ignored (and it takes a brave cyclist to not slow down despite knowing they'd arrive first). Also, cars turning into the minor road from the more major road are not clearly required to give way to cyclists.
The new slightly raised cycle lanes with bus islands are clearly much better in this regard and seem to be treated by drivers with the same priority as the road they are part of. So on the whole the new infrastructure seems to be dealing with the problem properly.
However, slightly against this trend, I noticed that the wonderful cycle lane by the guided bus route by the new Great Kneighton centre (marked on the map) has a dropped kerb to the not-yet-commissioned road and little in the way to indicate it's not going to be sliced in half when the road is opened properly.
Another trend seems to be to coerce cyclists to use pedestrian/cycle crossings at junctions, e.g. where the guided bus route ends at Francis Crick Avenue and the cycle lane continues onto the Addenbrookes site.
This is part of a bigger question about how much cyclists should be considered with the same priority as motorists (consider how long it takes the cycle road crossings on Fen Causeway to change, despite all the traffic moving at a snails pace).
What if anything can we do about this? What I really want is at a minimum for cyclists to be given _equal_ priority to the drivers.

This morning I noticed that two new concrete bollards have been installed at the North end of the Carter Cycle Bridge. These seem to be completely unnecessary and the position will probably cause accidents to cyclists descending into Devonshire Road.
Were the Campaign aware of this and can we do anything to get them removed?

At the moment it is possible to cycle from Cambridge Road, near Madingley, to Girton, on a bridleway that crosses over the A428 and then passes under the M11 at the Girton Interchange. You can then cross three roads (A1307) and reach a pavement on the North-East side of the Interchange. Using the pavement you can then reach Washpit Lane and cycle up towards Girton. (The pavement is marked as a shared-use route on the OSM Cycle map, although I am not sure that it really is.)
Apart from having to be careful when crossing the A1307 junction it is a rather pleasant route to ride.
The Girton Interchange is being "improved" to reduce the bottleneck for cars. Does anyone know what plans there are to ensure that the current route through remains open and whether there are plans to improve the bridleway route through? Or will this be another example of roads being developed to the detriment of footpaths/bridleways.

Because of queuing for the Grand Arcade car park, amongst other things, the mandatory cycle lane on Pembroke Street and Downing Street is routinely abused by motor vehicles – one every 66 seconds on a Saturday afternoon http://www.cyclestreets.net/galleries/221/.
The corner at Free School Lane is a particular concern because vehicles traveling east can't see oncoming cycles.

Has there been any improvement in the "new" NCN 11 route from Waterbeach to Lode since last summer? Last time I went that way I had to wheel the bike across fields and carry it over two or three stiles.
Any information, including a forecast date when a proper route is likely to be built, welcome. Thanks.

Rather than directly replacing the bollard slalom that existed beforehand, the bollard specialists might have suggestions on what the layout should be here which camcycle can suggest as for the replacement...

Project Orange is an attempt develop our general strategy during the year 2013.
It involves
1) Should Cambridge Go Dutch (or Copenhagenize)
2) A more assertive stance in our interactions with agencies: Demanding of them to make feasible what seems infeasible
3) focus on a regional area 10 miles (15 km) around Cambridge and a dartboard network structure to connect villages,
4) the development of a Bicycle Infrastructure Assessment Tool (BIAC) which will allow us to grade and praise provision
5) Priority over sideroads as part of a Dutch-style approach
5) Development of Visualisation Tools for major projects (Chisholm Trail, Newnham to Newmarket Rd, Mitcham's Corner)

London Cycling Campaign has reorientated its policy towards a 'Go Dutch' approach.
This aims to learn from best practice abroad rather than continuing with the 'hierarchy of provision' that, in 20 years in the UK, has arguably failed to deliver meaningful change.
This is an overarching issue for conceptual discussion of this issue.

Travis Perkins Development has major impact on Chisholm Trail.
We have a letter from the developer outlining their position - let's see if I can attach this...
There is a lengthy discussion of the Chisholm Trail, the gist of which is that they don't see why they should make any further accommodation for it when it is mainly Network Rail's land that is earmarked for the route. They dangle a small carrot in that they might release the corner piece of land to mitigate the pinch point you identified - but only if this application is given the go-ahead.

Rather than providing adequate cycle parking for their pupils this Sixth Form college is discouraging cycling and increasing the likelihood of cycle theft. The bikes that were previously attached to these railings are now left on the opposite side of the road where they are not so securely parked. The installation of one stand in the boundary of M&S facing Market Hill Square.
What general measures (publicity, fairs, web activity, leaflets, brochures, campaign manifestos) can we undertake to promote cycling in Cambridge in the most general sense?
This issue is a discussion area for proposals and discussion on creating general-purpose material and the approach that can be taken to promote cycling, and the difficult question of how this is balanced against difficulties that cyclists face in practice.
This issue is not for discussion of specific problematic infrastructure or helmet issues, or anything like that.
Various issues in Cambridge regarding bus driving and cyclist interactions. Work needs to be done to deal with this.
(This is actually a city-wide issue, but I've marked this as the bus station for now.)

Access to and return journey from the Crematorium is a real challenge for the cyclist. Indeed, chances are you may end up in it if you try to ride your bike there.
Here we have a essential public service which is accessible by car only. Is this acceptable ?
These issues arise also if a convoy of bicycles was to accompany a coffin.
What is to be done?

Aims of a bike harvest:
- Reduce bike ‘litter’
- Improve the number of available bike parking spaces
- Recycle bikes and provide affordable bikes (with lights) for new students
- Employ disadvantaged people
This junction has often been suggested a prime site where a continental-style 'all green phase' signalling scheme could be tried.

I propose the creation of bike/bus scheme: a bus service for Sundays and Bank holidays leaving Cambridge Rail Station, heading out through Barton Road and linking Burwash Manor, Wimpole Hall, Gamlingay Woods, Great Gransden Woods etc in a circular route. Short cycle routes to be developed around villages along the route. Cyclists can choose the length of journey they want to make and be assured of a ride home by bus if they do not wish to cycle back to Cambridge...
A 24 cycle bike-trailer can be towed behind a 20 seater bus, providing sustainable tourism access to South Cambridgeshire and passenger transport services for settlements that do not currently have Sunday services. Please respond and state whether you would be interested in such a service.
